Privacy Policy
This policy explains how Redcliff (“we”, “us”) handles information when you use the Weathercast mobile app (also shown as “Wettercast” in German) and the website weathercast.uk. We designed Weathercast to work with as little personal data as possible: there are no accounts, and your saved places and settings stay on your device.
1. Information the app uses
| Information | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Precise location (only if you allow it) | To show the weather, air quality, warnings and news for where you are. Your phone turns the coordinates into a city name using its built-in geocoder (Google on Android, Apple on iOS). The app sends the coordinates to our server, which rounds them to an area of roughly 5 km before looking up the weather. | Not stored in a database. Cached weather for the rounded area for up to 10 minutes; server logs up to 14 days. |
| IP address | Needed to deliver any internet request. If you don't allow location, we use it to estimate your approximate area (city level). Also used to protect the service from abuse (rate limiting). | Server and security logs up to 14 days. |
| Places you search for or save | Searches are sent to our server to find matching places. Saved places are kept only on your device. | Search results cached up to 24 hours (not linked to you). Saved places stay on your device until you remove them or uninstall the app. |
| App settings (units, theme, language, air-quality scale) | To remember your preferences. | Stored only on your device. |
| Basic device information (operating system, app version) | Sent with requests and when the app checks for updates, so we can deliver compatible content. | Server logs up to 14 days. |
We do not ask for your name, email address or phone number, we do not build profiles, and we do not sell your personal information.
2. Service providers
We use these providers to run Weathercast. They process data only to provide their service:
- Open-Meteo — forecasts, air quality and pollen. Our server sends it only the rounded coordinates of the area.
- WeatherAPI.com — place names, weather warnings and moon data. Receives the rounded location or place name; when the app is using approximate location, it receives your IP address to look up your area.
- OpenWeatherMap — weather map layers, requested by our server (no personal data).
- GNews — local news; receives only the city, region and country names.
- Mapbox — the map on the Map screen is loaded directly from Mapbox, which receives your IP address and device information. Mapbox telemetry is turned off in the app.
- Expo (EAS Update) — delivers app updates; receives your IP address, platform and app version.
- Cloudflare — network security and content delivery for our server and website.
- Vultr — hosts our server in Frankfurt, Germany.
News articles open in an in-app browser and are provided by their publishers, whose own privacy policies apply.
3. Advertising and notifications
The current version of Weathercast shows no ads and sends no push notifications. If we add them, we will update this policy first and ask for your consent where the law requires it (for example, for personalised ads in the EU and UK). You will be able to turn notifications off at any time in the app or your phone's settings.
4. Legal bases (EU/UK users)
- Consent — precise location (you can withdraw it any time in your phone's settings).
- Legitimate interests — using your IP address to deliver the service, estimate an approximate area and keep the service secure.
5. International transfers
Our server is in the EU (Germany). Some providers listed above may process data in other countries, including the United States. Where required, they rely on appropriate safeguards such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.
6. Your choices and rights
- Location: allow or deny it in your phone's settings. Weathercast still works with a searched city or approximate location.
- Delete your data: remove saved places in the app, or uninstall the app to delete everything stored on your device. Because we keep no account or profile, there is nothing else to delete beyond short-lived logs, which expire automatically.
- EU/UK (GDPR): you can request access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability, or object to processing, and complain to your local data protection authority.
- California and other US states: you can request to know or delete personal information. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising, and we do not use sensitive personal information to infer characteristics about you.
To make a request, email [email protected]. We'll respond within the time the law requires.
7. Children
Weathercast is a general-audience app and is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 in the EU). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
8. Security
All connections between the app and our server are encrypted (HTTPS). Our server only accepts traffic through Cloudflare, and access is restricted to authorised administrators.
9. Changes
We'll post any changes on this page and update the effective date. Significant changes will also be announced in the app.
